About So Bam Fun
We’re twins, Clara and Hasie Sherman, and we started So Bam Fun in 2024 around a kitchen table in Dallas — teaching friends American mahjong and realizing the game has a way of making strangers feel like old friends by the end of the night.
We created So Bam Fun to bring people together. To make new friends, spend time with old ones, and find community over a game we love. What started as a few friends learning to play has grown into lessons and events across 10+ U.S. cities — and we still answer every email ourselves.
Our Philosophy
We believe mahjong is for everyone.
It has a reputation for being complicated, but in our experience, most people are playing a real game within a single 2-hour session. The right instructor, a relaxed environment, and a group that’s ready to have fun — that’s all it takes.
Our instructors don’t just teach the rules. They teach the culture, the rhythm, and the joy of the game. We want every student to leave their first session excited to play again.
We’re also deliberate about where we host events. Every restaurant, bar, and hotel we work with is somewhere we’d choose to spend our own free time — places with character, good drinks, and the kind of energy that makes a night feel like something worth showing up for.
What We Teach
So Bam Fun specializes in American Mahjong, played with the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) card.
American Mahjong is played with 4 players, uses 152 tiles, and is won by building specific hands listed on the NMJL card. It’s social, strategic, and genuinely addictive once you learn it. We bring all the tiles, racks, and materials to every session — no equipment needed on your end.
We offer three ways to play:
Private Mahjong Lessons
We come to you. Our instructors travel to your home, apartment, or private venue and teach your group from scratch at your own pace. Perfect for friend groups, birthday celebrations, bachelorette parties, and family game nights.
Public Mahjong Events
Join us at restaurants, bars, and hotels across the city for a social night of tiles and new faces. Beginners and experienced players are both welcome — our instructors are on hand all night to keep the game moving and the fun going.
Corporate Mahjong Events
Mahjong is strategic, hands-on, and genuinely fun — which makes it one of the better team-building activities out there. It gets people off their screens and around the same table. We bring everything; you bring your team.
